Covid-19 tests soon to be required to travel to the US, doctor is you

Are you one of the people currently allowed to travel between Europe and the USA? Be careful because the rules change from January 26, 2021.

A new rule for travellers departing for the USA

As I said in my previous articles, Covid-19 testing is increasingly seen as an essential weapon to get the travel industry back on track, while containing the coronavirus epidemic. British Airways, KLM, Delta Airlines and Alitalia have already set up so-called "Covid-Free" flights, with systematic passenger testing.

The American authorities are now taking the stage! The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has decided that all travellers wishing to fly to the United States from January 26, 2021 will have to test negative at Covid-19 upon boarding.

As the borders are currently closed until further notice for tourists, this new provision is only for persons authorized to travel between the USA and Europe, especially expatriates residing in the United States. See the list of people who can currently travel between Europe and the USA.

How does it work in practice?

In practical terms, travellers wishing to travel to the USA will be required to be tested for Covid-19 within 3 days of their flight. The test will be required when boarding, so it is the airlines that will be responsible for enforcing this new rule.

Once in the U.S., travellers will be required to remain confined to their homes for 7 days and perform a second Covid-19 test within 3 to 5 days of arrival.

"Tests don't eliminate all risks," says CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, "but when combined with a period of stay at home and daily precautions such as masking and social distance, they can make travel safer by reducing the spread of the virus on planes, at airports and at destinations."
